The Kenai River is host to all four types of salmon, king, red, silver and pinks. King salmon runs are at a record low and ADFG closed fishing for them this year. But a near record run of sockeyes, or reds, showed up. Millions of reds returned to the Kenai River to spawn. Huge numbers of steady moving fish
enter into the river headed to upper parts of the river. Commercial fishermen, string out gill nets in cook inlet to intercept the fish, even so over 1,400,000 entered the river. ADFG allowed anglers 6 fish a day, 12 in possession. The fish were flooding the river, almost any day you could catch fish. This is the first time I made a real effort to pole fish for red salmon on the Kenai. Day one I caught two without trying very hard. The next day I caught five. Our last day I fish about 4 hours, hooked seven salmon but only managed to keep two fish. The really big fish got away!
The Kenai River offers great salmon fishing with rod and reel.
